Our teachers have spent years honing their skills in Colorado and will help guide you to success. Below is our 2022 class schedule through September. We are charging $20 (unless stated otherwise) to support our speakers and Harlequin’s educational direction. It is best to pre-register for these classes both in case they fill up or too few people register. Sat, Apr 16 at 10:00 AM         GETTING STARTED IN VEGETABLE GARDENING with Mimi Yanus

Class time: 10-11:30 am. If you are new to Colorado, new to vegetable gardening, or have been unhappy with the results of your earlier attempts, this class is for you. Learn from Mimi what you need to know to make your new organic vegetable garden successful, even bountiful, even in Colorado conditions! Registration deadline: April 13. Class cost: $30

Class Time: 10-11:30 am. Enhance your gardening success by planting the right veggie at the right time. Mimi will walk you through the gardening season, identifying what crops to grow when, and what varieties grow well in the Boulder area – Arugula to Zucchini! Registration Deadline: April 20. Class cost: $20

Sat, Apr 23 at 12:30 PM         MUSHROOMS OF COLORADO: ROCKY MOUNTAIN FUNGI with Zach Hedstrom   

Class Time: 12:30-2 pm. Between our riparian areas, pine forests, alpine zones, and other supportive habitats, mushrooms dwell in all corners of our state. Whether interested in foraging for wild food, or simply gaining an appreciation for our local fungi, it is crucial to understand both identification and ecology of mushrooms, and how to read landscape and flora for finding mushrooms. This is a lecture-style class. Last day to register: March 31. Class cost: $20

Sun, Apr 24 at 10:30 AM        SPROUTS FOR KIDS with Susan S Guegan

Class Time: 10:30-11:30 am. Ages 7 to 11. Come join in the fun in learning how to grow delicious sprouts in a jar. Each participant will leave with their own small sprouting jar with seeds. Susan loves working outside with seeds, plants, soil, microorganisms, and kids. Registration Deadline: April 21. Class cost: $25

Sun, Apr 24 at 1:00 PM          SPRING PRUNING with Mikl Brawner

Class Time: 1-2:30 pm. There are shrubs that should not be pruned in the spring and there are shrubs, roses and vines that are best pruned in spring. Learn which to prune when, and how to prune for strength, beauty, and production of fruit and flowers. (This is not a repeat of the Fall Pruning Class.)  Registration Deadline:  April 21. Class cost: $20

Sat, Apr 30 at 11:00 AM         IRRIGATION MADE EASY with Mackenzie Ehrenberg from Matrix Gardens

Class Time: 11-12:30 pm. Join us to learn easy ways you can make your own irrigation system! Grow healthier plants and learn how to use irrigation water efficiently by understanding the basics behind any drip irrigation system. You will also learn some specific ways to design your own irrigation system using a few simple components. Mackenzie is the foreman at Matrix Gardens, has extensive experience, and has earned his Sustainable Landscape Management Certification at ALCC. Registration Deadline: April 27. Class cost: $20

 

Sat, May 7 at 10:00 AM         GETTING STARTED IN VEGETABLE GARDENING with Mimi Yanus

Class Time: 10-11:30 am. If you are new to Colorado, new to vegetable gardening, or have been unhappy with the results of your earlier attempts, this class is for you. Learn from Mimi what you need to know to make your new organic vegetable garden successful, even bountiful, even in Colorado conditions! (This class is a repeat of April 16.) Sat, May 7 at 12:00 PM          RAINWATER HARVESTING with Mackenzie Ehrenberg from Matrix Gardens

Class Time:12-1:30 pm. Rain barrels are finally legal in Colorado! Learn about rain barrels and even better ways of using rainwater and snowmelt (rain gardens, pervious pavement, and greywater). Understand the easy ways to use this free water in your gardens while protecting yourself from flooding. Additional classes from Matrix Gardens on our website as confirmed. Registration Deadline: April 20. Class cost: $20

Sun, May 8 at 1:00 PM           BERRIES AND SMALL FRUITS with Mikl Brawner

Class Time: 1-2:30 pm. Small fruits are delicious, high in antioxidants, take up less space and bear sooner than trees: strawberries, currants, raspberries, grapes, gooseberries.  Learn about the best varieties for Colorado and how to grow them. Registration Deadline: May 5. Class cost: $20

 

Sat, May 14 at 10:30 AM       GARDENING WITH MUSHROOMS with Zach Hedstrom   

Class Time: 10:30-Noon. Join Zach for a class about the many ways you can incorporate mushrooms and fungi in your garden and lifestyle. You will learn the basic techniques for growing mushrooms, how to encourage fungal activity in your soil, and about the health-giving properties that you can experience from eating more mushrooms! Lecture-style class. Registration Deadline: May 11. Class cost: $20

Sun, May 15 at 1:30 PM         GROWING MUSHROOMS ON STRAW with Zach Hedstrom   

Class Time: 1:30-4:30 pm. This method of mushroom growing is easy and fast and leads to high rates of success. Straw cultivation does not require any special equipment to begin, and usually yields first flushes of mushrooms in only 1 to 2 months! In this hands-on workshop, we will go step-by-step through the process of growing mushrooms on straw.  Each student will take home their own straw mushroom kit to grow at home ($30 value). This is a hands-on workshop. Registration Deadline: May 12. Class cost: $50

Sat, May 21 at 1:30 PM          GROWING MUSHROOMS ON LOGS AND STUMPS with Zach Hedstrom  

Class Time: 1:30-4:30 PM. Growing on logs is one of the closest methods to the way mushrooms grow in nature, so one must apply some basic knowledge of ecology and natural systems to be successful. With sufficient care, mushroom logs can fruit for up to 6 years or more: intro to fungi, how to choose logs/stumps, 3 methods, log care, when to harvest, which mushrooms.  Students will come away with their own mushroom log to take home and grow ($40 value). This is a hands-on workshop. Registration Deadline: April 13. Class cost: $50

Sun, May 22 at 1:00 PM           BEST FRUIT TREES FOR COLORADO with Mikl Brawner

Class Time: 1-2:30 pm. Learn which varieties of fruit trees are successful here, which are not, and which are good flavored: Apples, Cherries, Plums, Pears, Peaches. Mikl’s first orchard was in 1976 and he will teach you how to care for your fruit trees. Registration Deadline: May 19. Class cost: $20

Class Time: 10:30-11:30am. Growing beans can be easy and fun. Join in the fun of seeing the many shapes and colors of bean seeds. Each participant will leave with a “magic bean” to grow in their garden. Registration Deadline: May 19. Class cost: $20

Class Time: 1-2:30 pm. Learn how to turn waste into wealth by cultivating soil microorganisms. Nature does the work if you know how to lend a hand.  In this class, you will learn what works in our climate, and what doesn’t. Mikl has been composting for 35years. Registration Deadline: June 16.  Class Cost: $20

 

Sun, Jul 10 at 1:00 PM            MANAGING GARDEN PESTS WITHOUT POISONS with Mikl Brawner   

Class Time: 1-2:30 pm. Learn how to look for and identify common pests, and how to judge if anything needs to be done. Learn which organic solutions are the most effective, for what, and how to do it. Mikl has been walking this talk for 35 years. Registration Deadline: July 7. Class cost: $20

Sat, Jul 23 at 1:00 PM             BASIC LANDSCAPE DESIGN with Elaine Walker   

Class Time: 1-3:00 pm. Elaine is a landscape architect who will show you the elements of designing areas of your property. Learn how to observe your site, identify goals, take a site analysis, create a comprehensive design, and how to approach installation in manageable pieces. Registration Deadline: July 20. Class cost: $20

Sun, Jul 31 at 1:00 PM            TIPS & TRICKS OF XERISCAPE with Mikl Brawner   

Class Time: 1-2:30 pm. Gardening with less water is not that hard if you know how! There are tricks that will improve your success. Mikl will pass on his 30 years of xeriscape experience. Registration Deadline: July 28.

Class Time: 1-2:30 pm. Weed barrier, wood chips, straw, fine gravel, bark? Which mulches should be used and where? Why is mulching so important? What’s wrong with redwood and cedar? Mikl will discuss these questions and suggest solutions. Registration Deadline: August 11. Class cost: $20

Class Time: 1-2:30 pm. Mikl has been researching, building, and using simple greenhouses for 20 years. This class will focus on five designs on site at the nursery. Registration Deadline: September 15. Class cost: $20
